유형 1 Question

What holidays do people celebrate in your country? Tell me when they fall, what each one is for, and whether any of them are big cultural occasions — enough detail that an outsider could really understand them.

[Int.] You want to know about holidays? Okay! Let me tell you about a few holidays we have. We celebrate Seollal, Chuseok, and Christmas.

First, Seollal is our New Year. It's in winter, and we spend it with family. I think it's my favorite. We also celebrate Chuseok, which is like Thanksgiving in the U.S. Families get together for this holiday too. It's another one of my favorites.

And then there's Christmas. It's Jesus Christ's birthday. Even people who aren't Christian celebrate it. I could talk about more holidays, but I think that's enough for now. What about holidays in your country?

2 Question

Let's zoom in on one holiday. When is it, what food is on the table, how does the family take part, and are there traditions or events that happen every year? Tell me everything about it.

Good. I want to talk about Seollal. Like I said, Seolla is a Korean new year’s day. It is a very special day. So, we love to do many things.

First, we indulge in a variety of food. We eat traditional rice cake soup called ‘Tteokguk’. Tteokguk is quiet delicious. So, I often find myself going for a second bowl.

Also, we play traditional games called ‘Yutnori’. Umm… It is somewhat difficult to explain in English, but anyway, when you come to Korea, give it a shot! It’s truly fun!

What else…. hmm… oh my….god! When families gather for Seollal, we drink tons of alcohol. We drink like a fish. We sometimes get a crazy hangover the next day.

It sounds like a fun day. Doesn’t it?

3 Question

Do you have a holiday memory from childhood that you treasure? Which holiday was it, what made it special, and was there one moment that made it stand out? Explain why this memory is the one you chose.

Well... I went to Jeju Island with my family during Seollal, which is Korean New Year's Day. We chose this holiday for a trip because it's hard to go on vacation without using the holiday break.

I remember this trip because the island was really beautiful. I loved the view of the ocean and there were lots of good places to eat.

The best part of the trip was eating at a black pork restaurant at Hamdeok Beach.

The pork was so tasty that I had more than three servings. Just thinking about it makes me want to eat it again. This is why it was the most memorable holiday for me.
