Part 1
유형 1 Question
I'd love to hear about the place you live in. Walk me through your home — how many rooms it has, how they're arranged, and what it looks like overall.
Okay, Ava. I’d like to describe what my home looks like.
It is actually not that special. It’s just like any other typical apartment that you can find in Korea.
Well, as I said, it’s not that special. So, as you may already know, just like any other typical apartments, there are three rooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom is used by my parents and my brother uses the other master bedroom.
So, whenever I need to use the bathroom, I have to enter my brother’s room and ask him if it is okay to use it. It’s so annoying.
- Typical —
유형 2 Question
Tell me how a typical day at home goes for you. What do you usually do around the house on weekdays, and how is that different on weekends?
Well as you know, I have to admit, I absolutely turned into a homebody. I usually have to stay at home doing many things.
The thing is…. I think it’s a bit dangerous to go to a crowded place. So, I often chill in my room on both weekends and weekdays. Here are the things that I do.
Let’s see… yeah! I love music. I just love music so much. One long, boring winter got me interested in music. One day, I was so bored that I wanted to try new trending songs using some streaming platforms and it was so good. So, I often listen to music at home to destress myself.
Plus, when I listen to music while working out at home, I feel like I am over the moon.
Lastly, I think I spend most of my time watching movies. I recently subscribed to Netflix. It’s a good killing time and I often lose track of time when binge-watching it.
- Lose track of time — 시간 가는 줄 모르다
- Over the moon —
- Absolutely / Definitely —
- Kill time — 시간을 때우다

Homes always seem to have something that needs fixing. Tell me about a few problems that have come up in your home — maybe a repair that never got finished or trouble with the plumbing.
Oh man. There are lots of problems at home. Among all the problems I had, I think I can talk about these.
The biggest issue is the plumbing. You know, I am living in a very old apartment and I face lots of issues due to low water pressure. Because of the low water pressure issue, my toilet gets clogged. It is super disgusting. Eww
Next thing is the cockroach. Cockroaches just love my apartment. I don’t know why. I just don’t know. So many cockroaches around me annoy me. One day, I think I saw a group of families. Just thinking about it makes me want to puke. Eww.
Lastly, hmm…. yes. Okay, the heater issue!
You know what? In Korea, we use floor heaters. Floor heaters are perfect. But, they sometimes break down easily. They cost a fortune to fix. So, I just always pray that they function properly in the freezing cold winter season.
I think that’s all I can talk about. How about you?
- Freezing cold —

Now pick one specific problem you've had at your house and tell me the whole story. When did it happen, what caused it, and what exactly did you do, step by step, to get it fixed?
I see… I’ve had a number of problems in my house. Among all the issues I’ve had, I think the biggest problem was the roaches.
You know, as I said, I was living in an old apartment. That means more roaches next to me. They were so disgusting that just thinking about it makes me wanna puke. One day, I thought the roach was as big as my thumb. So, what could I do? I just had to kill them all because I just couldn’t stand it.
So, at first, I thought about calling a company that specializes in eliminating roaches. But, they cost a fortune. So, instead, I just bought some cockroach killers from a drugstore and applied everywhere. It was the most annoying thing I’d ever done. It was such a big hassle.
Anyway, the result was….. Ta-da! They were gone! I mean… really gone. I couldn’t believe it.
Yeah, this was definitely the biggest problem I’d ever had.
- Absolutely / Definitely —
- Pharmacy / Drugstore — 약국
유형 6 Question
Here's a situation for you to act out. You're shopping for new furniture for your home. Talk to the salesperson about what you have in mind, and ask three or four questions to learn more.
Hi, excuse me. Is this IKEA? I am calling to see if there is a couch for my new apartment. I am moving in soon.
First, what sizes do you have? Actually, the place I am moving to isn’t that spacious. So, I think a two-seater couch will do its job. I think anything bigger than that will just be a waste of space. Do you have any smaller ones?
What about the color? I am okay with all types of colors except for pinks and oranges. I do not prefer ones that are too colorful or too bright.
Lastly, is there any promotion? I heard that there would be some types of promotions like BOGO or Buy one get one 50% off. If there is, I will be happy to go and get it right now.
If you don’t mind, could you answer please? That will be it.

7 Question
It turns out the furniture you bought has a problem. Call the store, describe what's wrong, and work out how to get it resolved.
I am sure you remember me. I am the person who recently bought the couch from your store. I have a serious problem with this product.
Well, when I got home, I checked the product. It was looking fine on the outside. However, when I unboxed it, I realized that it had been scratched by something. I think somebody must have damaged it. It clearly was not on me. I want to set this straight.
So, I’d like to get a refund immediately. I know that it is non-refundable once it is open. But, it had a serious problem with it. So, I’d like to get a refund.
Or, I’d like to get a new product immediately. I believe it was your fault for selling a defective product. If not, I will have no choice but to report it to the headquarter. What’s your name?
- Have no choice but to — ~할 수밖에 없다
- Defective product — 불량품
유형 8 Question
Has anything you bought for your home ever turned out to be faulty? Tell me what went wrong with it and how you dealt with the situation.
Actually, it really happened to me when I bought a new bed for my new studio apartment. I asked for a smaller sized one. I think I asked for a standard size. But, what was annoying was that a queen size mattress was delivered. I think the mattress was as big as my entire room. It just occupied the entire place. So, I had to get rid of it immediately.
So, I asked for a refund but you know their answer was that they had to charge me for the shipping cost. And, I was like… what the heck? They said that I hadn’t placed an order correctly. So, I was like…Okay, you need to double check it and it turned out it was clearly their fault. Anyway, they gave me a full refund and I just bought a new one from a different store.
- Ask for a refund —
- Place an order —
